Attractions around Uilkraal Tube and Putt


Uilenkraalsmond is the municipal ODM (Overberg District Municipality) Caravan Park situated at the mouth of the Boesmans Rivier (Bushmans River). Large Middens of shellfish can still be found along “De Gruis” of these Nomadic tribes.

This is a very popular holiday resort with a big caravan park, self-catering chalets, private semi-permanent stands, Supertube, putt-putt and Cafe. Originally settled by Pieter Swart in 1722, it became a popular December get together and trading post for surrounding farmers and families.

The tranquil lagoon is safe for swimming and one can enjoy long walks on the beach. Adjacent to Cape Nature Reserve, locally called “Die Gruis”, with long pristine beaches all the way to Pearly Beach.

Uilkraalsmond is named after the Giant Eagle Owl (Verreaux’s eagle-owl) that nest in the surrounding trees. With one of the deepest calls in the bird kingdom their “who-who” can be heard from far.

Platbos:

On the road out of Uilkraalsmond, over the R43, toward Baardskeersdersbos. Ride over the mountain ridge (Sopieshoogte) and turn off first left on the gravel road to Uilkraal farm and Grootbos you will pass Platbos on the left – Africa’s most Southernmost Forest. A Lowland Afrotemperate forest remnant, it is filled with ancient trees, some of which are over 1000 years old.

If you carry on with road from Platbos you will arrive at Grootbos, alternatively can reach from R43 before De Kelders.
